Smart Cities and CommunitiesTowards the cities of the future

Cities are already responsible for around three quarters of global CO2 emissions and the number of people living in cities is continuously increasing. There is thus an urgent need to improve the energy efficiency of buildings with the help of sustainable retrofitting, renewable energies and intelligent energy management systems. It is important to expand and integrate sustainable mobility and ICT solutions. Above all, a strong engagement and involvement of citizens is of highest importance.

In order to address all these issues comprehensively, the European Commission promotes cross-sectoral as well as international cooperation. Cities can exchange ideas internationally within the framework of "Smart Cities and Communities" projects. The aim here is to intelligently interlink technologies in the areas of energy efficiency, mobility, ICT and citizen engagement. "Positive Energy District" projects are the logical further development of this concept, leading towards energy-producing instead of energy-consuming districts. Together, cities are setting new impulses for sustainable urban development within the framework of these international cooperations: more than 100 cities in 18 countries have been supported by the European Commission so far. They are testing new forms of cooperation and becoming thus centres of innovation on their own.
