An integrated and systemic strategy to shape the intelligent cities of tomorrow (CITyFiED)

In the EU project CITyFiED, an integrated and systemic strategy for the design of smart cities was developed. Three districts served as demonstration areas: Duero-Valladolid (Spain), Soma (Turkey) and Lund (Sweden). A total of 21 partners worked on the project.

The three demonstration areas of the project Duero-Valladolid (Spain), Soma (Turkey) and Lund (Sweden) were refurbished in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner and supplied with innovative cooling and heating solutions, including district heating technologies and the integration of distributed power generation. During the project period, 190,000 m2 in 2,067 residential buildings were renovated. Over 4,500 residents were involved in the measures. By this means, the energy consumption could be reduced by 35% and the share of renewable energies increased by 61%. The CITyFiED Innovation Management Guide published by SEZ/S2i after the project was concluded describes a method for planning, launching and imitating energy-efficient renovation.

The project founded its own city cluster in which 55 interested cities were encouraged to replicate the developed solutions. From Germany, Ludwigshafen, the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, Ludwigsburg, Hamburg-Altona and Dresden were involved. The project was coordinated by Spanish research institute Fundación CARTIF.

Steinbeis Europa Zentrum supported as a project partner the Exploitation of the project results for market introduction and measures to stimulate imitation, support in the management of intellectual property as well as training on IPR, exploitation, risk assessment and business models.
