Clean energy for EU islands forum 2023 in Saaremaa, Estland

On behalf of the European Commission Steinbeis Europa Zentrum takes the lead in communication within the secretariat for ‘Clean energy for EU islands’ and as part of this role organized the Clean energy for EU islands forum 2023 on June 7th and 8th on the Estonian island of Saaremaa. At the event location ‘Thule Koda’ all participants got together on the two event days to discuss together about the transition of European islands to 100% renewable power sources. 250 people participated on-Site and online.

The forum was executed by Steinbeis Europa Zentrum with 4 colleagues on site. 95 participants exchanged their experience regarding a clean energy transition, technology solutions and solutions on-site, with an additional 120 participating via livestream. On the second day, 60 people participated in the site visit on the island.

The forum was opened by Jan Cornillie – Project coordinator of Clean energy for EU islands secretariat (3E), Eero Ailio, Senior Adviser Energy Transition, DG Energy , European Commission and the mayor of Saaremaa, Mikk Tuisk.

Kadri Simson, EU Commissioner for energy, gave the kickoff for the project “30 to 30”. 30 island were selected to receive technical support in order to achieve complete energy independence by 2030 through 100% renewable energy sources. This marks the opening of the third phase of the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat.

As one of 5 partners, which manage the secretariat, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum actively takes the leading role for communication and event management. They support the island community with different measures in regards to public work, including publication, podcasts, videos as well as seminars and conferences. An action-oriented approach in the spirit of ‘Explore, Shape & Act’ accompanies the islands in their transition to clean energy and on their path to decarbonization.

Other partners are 3E, Belgium, Th!nk E, Belgium, DNV, Belgien, RdA, Portugal, ECONOLER, Bulgaria, Energy Academy, Denmark, DAFNI, Greece. The EU-Secretary supports the European island communities among other things with the development of agendas for a clean energy transition, the identification of individual projects and their preparation. They also offer an access to online-cooperation platforms and Peer-to-Peer support. The following topics are highly scheduled: energy generation, energy efficiency, transportation, as well as heating and cooling.
