European project METABUILDING
Innovation promotion and support for cross-sectoral cooperation projects of SMEs in the building sector
The METABUILDING project aims to bring innovation into the "traditional" value chain of the construction sector and at the same time systematically extend this value chain to other industrial actors and sectors to create an extended industrial sector of the "built environment".
16 European project partners promote cooperative, cross-sectoral and cross-border projects with SME participation. The focus is on five industrial sectors: construction, digital industry, additive manufacturing, nature-based solutions and circular economy & recycling. Synergies are to be created between these sectors.
A total of 140 companies from certain countries can apply for funding - this will start in 2020 in the form of innovation vouchers ("voutchers" - SEED funding) and will be expanded in 2021 through cooperation projects (GROW and HARVEST funding). These project grants serve to further develop defined activities of SME cooperation projects from different sectors; but technical support from the consortium can also be requested. A total budget of 3.75 million euros is available for support.
The project will set up a marketplace in the form of a digital platform open to all stakeholders in the wider construction sector, providing innovation-related information and helping SMEs to find partners for collaborative projects and innovative technologies. The platform will be closely linked to the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP) and is expected to become a central tool for SME innovation and collaboration in Europe.
The Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum supports the project in the Steering Committee and as a "Business Provider". It leads the activities to expand the innovation ecosystem, which ensures the sustainability of METABUILDING's activities. In addition, the SEZ is responsible for the exploitation of the project results. For this purpose, an exploitation strategy is adapted to the project and enables the direct approach of users. This method has already been applied and further developed in several EU projects. An important role is plays the support of the coordinator NOBATEK/INEF4 from France in the design and evaluation of the embedded "Cascade Funding". Details on funding for German SMEs will be published in the respective calls.
