European project INNOADDITIVE

Innovative Challenges for Additive Manufacturing

Significant advances in additive manufacturing technology – commonly known as 3D printing – have changed the way products are designed, developed, manufactured and distributed over the last decade. This presents new challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in terms of awareness of the benefits of additive manufacturing and the acquisition of new skills and staff. At the same time, new innovation support programmes based on open innovation working models, such as innovation awards and hackathons (also known as Innovation Challenges), have been piloted across Europe to improve SMEs' awareness of the benefits of novel technologies and innovation methods.

The INNOADDITIVE project aims to improve the knowledge of innovation agencies on successful support initiatives that have a proven impact on the uptake of additive manufacturing technologies in SMEs.

A focus is on finding initiatives that adopt innovative and efficient formats of Innovation Challenges. This will be done by searching for existing initiatives (in the three partner regions) in this field and by sharing relevant know-how through three peer learning workshops organised by the project partners and targeting innovation experts. Finally, the project will produce an actionable guide on how to design novel Innovation Challenges that accelerate the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies by SMEs.

As a project partner, Steinbeis 2i GmbH will take on the following tasks:

  • Identification of 'Good Practices' from Baden-Württemberg
  • Conducting interviews with the good practices
  • Organisation of a workshop to present the good practices from Baden-Württemberg.

INNOADDITIVE is a coordination and support action of the European Commission in the field of additive manufacturing with a consortium of three partners. The project is funded by the EU through the Horizon 2020 programme (Grant Agreement No. 870598).

Project duration: 11/2019 – 04/2021

Participating countries: Germany, Italy, Sweden
