KIC InnoEnergy as a European innovation platform was initiated by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The German office, since 2012 acting as KIC InnoEnergy Germany GmbH, deals with the issue of energy from chemical fuels. Founders are the KIT, the University of Stuttgart, the company EnBW as well as the Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum (SEZ) with offices in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. As further associated partners the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG-ISI, Karlsruhe) are involved at KIC InnoEnergy Germany GmbH.

Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum ensures that the planned technology transfer activities reach in particular SMEs. In this way, the user market in the energy area shall quickly apply brand new technologies and add value. Moreover,
SEZ is committed to ensure that women in science, education and business are won over to deal with the issue of energy and contribute their skills to create more innovations. Similarly, SEZ strategically supports the creation of start-ups.
