nanodiag BWNanopore Technology for Future Medical Diagnostics Enters Its Second Phase

Nanopore technologies are among the most promising approaches for achieving more precise, faster and cost‑effective medical diagnostics in the future. Since April 2023, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum has supported the Zukunftscluster nanodiagBW as an innovation management partner, significantly contributing to guiding scientific and technological developments toward real-world application. The first three-year implementation phase will conclude at the end of March 2026—an intensive period in which Steinbeis Europa Zentrum team has taken on key responsibilities.

These included continuous market and technology monitoring to identify trends, relevant competitors and technological developments at an early stage. In addition, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum supported cluster partners through targeted research and advisory services on EU funding opportunities to identify suitable instruments for research, development and technology transfer. Another core task was the advancement of the cluster strategy: strategic impulses, exploitation workshops and various participatory formats helped shape a shared framework for the cluster’s future direction.

It is therefore especially encouraging that the second implementation phase of the cluster has now been approved and will seamlessly continue the work from April 2026 onwards. In this phase as well, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum will play a central role: market and technology monitoring will continue and be expanded by a systematic assessment of currently unmet needs of potential end users— including clinicians, patients, and representatives from the pharmaceutical and diagnostics industries. These prioritised needs will directly inform the further development of the research and innovation strategy and support the derivation of market‑oriented, economically viable innovations.

Furthermore, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum will support the development and implementation of a systematic needs and impact assessment under the leadership of Cluster Manager Hanna Hasselblatt (Hahn-Schickard). This qualitative and quantitative self-evaluation will enable the cluster to measure progress transparently, make impacts visible and continuously refine its strategic direction.

With the continuation of the cluster, nanodiagBW is well positioned to further advance the translation of nanopore-based diagnostics from research into practical application—supported by Steinbeis Europa Zentrum as a key innovation partner along this path.

30 million Euro Funding for nanodiagBW, 04/2023 – 03/2029 (2 Phases)

„Working with the team at Steinbeis Europa Zentrum is a genuine asset to the nanodiagBW Zukunftscluster—both professionally and personally. The well grounded market watch reports, competitor analyses, and the targeted research and advice on EU funding opportunities provide us with valuable strategic guidance. What I appreciate in particular is the strong personal fit within the team, their openness to new perspectives, and the broad methodological expertise they bring to moderation and workshops. This combination fosters a truly collaborative partnership in driving innovation within the cluster—one that is not only highly effective but also genuinely enjoyable.“
