TRIANGULUM ProjectSuccessful completion of one of the first Smart Cities projects thanks to Steinbeis Europa Zentrum
With Steinbeis Europa Zentrum as co-coordinator and main partner responsible for the communication, dissemination and event organisation of the project, Triangulum was successfully concluded in January 2020 as one of the first three Smart Cities and Communities projects of the European Commission. Already on 23 and 24 September 2019, the large, international final conference titled "Energising Cities: Innovations, Challenges & Solutions" took place in one of its three Lighthouse Cities - Stavanger, Norway - which was mainly organised by SEZ in cooperation with the local partners. Immediately afterwards, Nordic Edge 2019 took place, which is one of the many spin-offs of the project, bringing several thousand Smart City stakeholders from all over Europe to Stavanger each year. With a total of 185 participants and 25 speakers from all over Europe, the final conference and the Triangulum side session at Nordic Edge were a great success for the project.
Triangulum was one of the first Smart Cities and Communities projects funded by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 framework programme for research and innovation. At the end of the project in January 2020, Triangulum looks back on many achievements in its three Lighthouse Cities Manchester (UK), Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Stavanger (Norway) as well as in the three Follower Cities Leipzig (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic) and Sabadell (Spain). Climate change, policy recommendations, citizen engagement, investment opportunities, replication, monitoring and evaluation were the main topics that the five-year project focused on. With its expertise and results, Triangulum has been able to contribute to major changes at the local level: for example, Triangulum has had a significant impact on the City of Stavanger and has been able to contribute to a major reduction in CO2 emissions, reports Christine Sagen Helgø, the city's mayor. In Manchester, Triangulum has increased the share of electrically powered vehicles from 5% to 25%. And in Eindhoven, for example, the project was able to fund the renovation of 11,200 m2 of social housing, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%. On the other hand, Triangulum, together with its sister projects Remourban and GrowSmarter, as one of the first three Smart Cities projects, was also able to initiate major changes at the European level, for example through the development of further Smart Cities projects such as Smarter Together, as well as through the intensive (digital and physical) transfer of knowledge regarding various best practices or concrete monitoring methods to younger projects. The city of Leipzig even managed to make the leap from being a Follower City in Triangulum to becoming a Lighthouse City within SPARCS project.
„Steinbeis Europa Zentrum supported us from the very beginning with its extremely structured and professional project management, both on an administrative and financial level, which was a great advantage not only for us as coordinators, but also for the many questions our project partners had. In combination with their diverse and interactive communication activities, SEZ was the ideal partner for us to make Triangulum one of the most successful Smart City projects of its time.“
