European project BrainTwin
Development of a World-Level Neuroengineering Research Centre by European Twinning
Neuroengineering is a discipline with high potential for the future, that uses engineering techniques to study, restore, replace, or enhance neural systems. It comprises the application of engineering principles and techniques to the field of neuroscience. By bringing together research departments from medical sciences and engineering fields, there is a high potential to achieve further significant progress e.g. in the comprehension and care of neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in the development of brain-connected prosthetics.
The BrainTwin project will strengthen the research collaboration and networking in the field of Neuroengineering between leading research institutions in Romania, Germany and Spain with the support of knowledge transfer organizations from Austria and Germany.
The Technical University Gheorghe Asachi of Iași (TUIASI) is an excellent university in engineering fields and is thus part of the North East Regional Innovative Cluster for Structural and Molecular Imaging (the only medical imaging cluster in Romania). For this reason, TUIASI has the strategy to develop a new center for research and education in the field of Neuroengineering and will need the strong support of internationally leading counterparts in Germany and Spain. In this scope, the project BrainTwin encompasses a twinning exercise, which will enhance the scientific and technological capacity by knowledge exchange.
The focus lays on early stage researchers, strengthen the research management skills and visibility of Romanian Neuroengineering Research in order to compete at international level and widen scientific excellence and innovation capacity of all the partners.
The development of an International Project Support Centre for proposal preparation and project management/administration, as well as joint workshops and summer schools, short-term staff exchanges, and expert twinning visits will support reaching these objectives.
Playing an important role in the consortium, Steinbeis 2i is a project partner responsible for the working package “Strengthening the research management and administration skills to compete successfully for internationally competitive research funding”.
The partnership is formed by 5 partners: Universitatea Tehnica Gheorghe Asachi din Iași – TUIASI, Romania, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V., Germany, Steinbeis 2i GmbH, Germany, Universidad de Salamanca, Spain, Zentrum für Soziale Innovation GmbH, Austria
BrainTwin is funded of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme with a total grant of 900.000 Euro.
Project duration: 09/2020 – 08/2023
Participating countries: Austria, Germany, Romania, Spain
