KIC InnoEnergy – a sustainable energy system for Europe through close integration of research, innovation and education
The international Knowledge and Innovation Community KIC InnoEnergy is one of three "Knowledge and Innovation Communities” (KIC), which are funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) since the summer of 2010. Within KIC InnoEnergy companies, universities and research institutes are working towards the common goal of creating by 2050 a sustainable energy system for Europe. The interaction in the knowledge triangle of research, innovation and education is a priority of the network. In particular, the training of young entrepreneurs, corresponding doctoral programmes and a tight network of the partners will ensure that innovative energy technologies come to the market faster.
The initiation of the network was performed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Since then, an umbrella organization has been established – a European stock corporation (KIC InnoEnergy SE), based in the Netherlands. Six regional bundled co-location centers form the KIC InnoEnergy Consortium: "Benelux", "Iberia", "Alps Valleys", "Sweden", "Poland Plus" and "Germany". Each of the six KIC InnoEnergy co-location centers coordinate an important issue for all partners in the field of energy.
The German co-location deals with the issue of energy from chemical fuels. The German co-location is formed by the KIT, the University of Stuttgart as well as the company EnBW. Furthermore, as associated partners, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG-ISI, Karlsruhe), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Stuttgart, the company Intel (Munich), the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) and the Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum (SEZ) with offices in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe are involved.
The Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum ensures that the planned technology transfer activities reach in particular SMEs. In this way, the user market in the energy area shall quickly apply brand new technologies and add value. Moreover, the SEZ will be committed to ensure that women in science, education and business are won over to deal with the issue of energy and contribute their skills to create more innovations. Similarly, the SEZ strategically supports the creation of start-ups.
