Bioactive plant foods network
Transnational network for the promotion of bio-active plant ingredients
A total of currently 20 network partners from industry, research and marketing have come together as part of the network in order to advance the issue of “biological activity and health" in Baden-Württemberg, managed by Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum. The network is funded by the "Central Innovation programme SME – ZIM" under the funding module NEMO of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum is coordinating the consortium since 1 August 2010 and plans to expand this network and to firmly establish it in Baden-Wuerttemberg.
The network focuses on bioactive natural ingredients with a positive effect on health. It will help to ensure that these ingredients are better researched and that their use in the food industry and medicine is increased. In the focus of the activities are in particular ingredients that prevent and control overweight and obesity and the related diseases such as Diabetes and that support the regeneration of cells and organs.
Objectives of the network are:
- to inform about secondary plant compounds
- to lead to a better understanding of secondary plant compounds and their effectiveness
- to improve the quality of the ingredients, e.g. by the adaptation of the cultivation factors
- to enhance the scientific traceability of positive health effects of secondary plant compounds
- to create resources and synergies through networking of research and medium sized industry
- to better inform consumers about the secondary plant compounds and their positive effects
The network will address both consumers and physicians and the medium sized food industry.
Competencies of the network
The network partners are made up of research institutes with expertise in plant biology regarding the cultivation and extraction of plant constituents, and of medium sized biotechnology companies who analyze these ingredients. In addition, also network institutions in the field of nutritional medicine and data processing are partners in the network. Through close cooperation and regular exchange of the partners all benefit from the network: the already existing developments and experiences are combined in the network and further developed together.
The German partners are:
